In parallel with the emergence and spread of the coronavirus, the Harghita County Council organized an online roundtable discussion on the experiences of introducing online education outside the classroom and on how to deal with the challenges in education, in the framework of the XVI Harghita Days, where experts presented the positive aspects of the coronavirus epidemic in education by sharing their experiences.
“Perspectives within and beyond our borders – online roundtable discussion on the opportunities and challenges of digital education”
At the meeting, Ádám Horváth, permanent expert of the Digital Wellbeing Programme (DWP), pointed out that the digital work schedule means emergency teaching, not pedagogical innovation for education on the digital platform. She also highlighted the importance of the Digital Education Action Plan launched by former EU Commissioner Tibor Navracsics, which provides a focused intervention system by setting out the direction of digital development.
The DWP expert said that the aim is to continue to develop digital competences in the future, because a substantial pedagogical change is needed to ensure that the upcoming generation leaves the education system with digital competences. According to Ádám Horváth, not only the content and the method, but also the output requirement and the examination objectives should be changed based on the EU recommendation by introducing the DigComp Digital Competence Framework. “We need to understand what digital technology is good for, to integrate it into the teaching process and to teach children how to search and find information in the digital system in the right way.”
The discussion was attended by representatives of the Education Office, Óbuda University, the National Faculty of Education, Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania, Babeș – Bolyai University, the Association of Hungarian Teachers in Romania, the Harghita County Inspectorate of Education, as well as representatives of local governments and economic operators.
During the virtual county-days, from May 24 to June 4, 2020, more than 10 events per day could be followed on the Facebook pages of the organizing institutions, the Council of Harghita County and its subinstitutions, as well as other cultural institutions and organizations.
